The Story of Antonio Paglia, and his trip to America
The story of Antonio Paglia,Son of Nicola Paglia and Rosanna ( Bagnoli ) Paglia.
Antonio Paglia was born of Janurary 29th 1894 in Busso, Campobasso, Italy.
 
His parents, Nicola Paglia and Rosanna ( Bagnoli ) Paglia, sent Antonio to Baranello, Campobasso, Italy at the youg age of ten to live with a family, so that he could learn the shoe making trade.
 
Sometime between 1910 -1913, Antonio took a bride, whose surname was " Chiarullo. "
 
Her first name is un - known at this time.
 
On September 8th, 1913 Antonio arrived at Ellis Island departing from Palermo, Sicily, Italy with his sister, Adelina( Paglia ) Niro, and Brother -  In - Law, Michele Niro.
 
Antonio was just 19 years old, with $25.00 to his name.
 
Antonio settled in Cleveland, Ohio and lived with his Brother - In - Law, Crezenzo Chiarullo.
 
Antonio took his first job as a gardener at the Cleveland Museum of Art. 
 
He eventually found a job as a shoemaker on Warner Rd.  This is where he met his future wife, Filomena ( Falzini ) Paglia. 
 
They were married in 1921. 
 
With a lot of hard work and determenation, Antonio opened his own shoe store, A.P. Shoes on Fulton Rd. 
 
Antonio lived above the store with Filomena, and their five children.
 
In 1953, Antonio Paglia sold the shoe store and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.

The origin of our surname ---
 
Paglia is derived from the French name " Paille " which is a metonymic name for someone who gathered straw, or used it to make hats or mattresses,from paille straw.
 
It may also been a nick name for some one with straw - colored hair.
